NYSC Condemns Assault of Female Corps Member by Anambra Vigilante Operatives

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has strongly condemned the assault of a female Corps Member by operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area. In a statement issued by the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the scheme described the incident as “unacceptable and dehumanising,” stressing that no circumstance could justify such treatment of a Corps Member.

The NYSC further assured the public that it fully supports the ongoing police investigation to unravel the circumstances of the attack and bring justice to the victim. It also disclosed that administrative measures were underway to provide both psychological and physiological support to the affected Corps Member, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and safety of all serving members nationwide.

Meanwhile, a former Corps Member who served in Onitsha North between 2021 and 2022 recounted his unpleasant experiences with vigilante operatives in the state. Identified as Unity from Delta State, he described the group as hostile, “naturally bittered and easily triggered,” adding that despite always carrying his ID and cap, he often encountered threats from them. He expressed solidarity with the assaulted Corps Member, urging that justice must prevail.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians demanding accountability from security operatives in Anambra State. The state government has announced initial steps to address the situation, while prominent voices, including the wife of Governor Charles Soludo, have condemned the act and demanded justice. Public reactions continue to highlight broader concerns about the conduct of vigilante groups and their treatment of citizens, particularly NYSC members.
