The Nigerian government has announced plans to strengthen its security collaboration with China, focusing on local arms production and military training.
This initiative is part of Nigeria’s strategy to combat terrorism and address insecurity within its borders and across the region.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, disclosed this during a briefing with State House correspondents after President Bola Tinubu hosted China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday.
Wang Yi’s visit to Nigeria is part of his four-nation African tour, which includes stops in Namibia, DR Congo, and Chad.
Highlighting the importance of the partnership, Tuggar explained that working with China would enable Nigeria and neighboring countries to respond more effectively to shared security threats.
“We want to work with countries like China in domesticating production of military equipment, both kinetic and non-kinetic.
“We’re looking for this, so, we don’t have to go out looking to procure with delays and many rules and regulations. We need to be able to produce locally,” Tuggar said.
