Nigeria has officially submitted its bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, positioning Abuja as the proposed host city. The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) confirmed the submission of the expression of interest before the March 28 deadline, signaling Nigeria’s ambition to become the first African nation to host the prestigious event.
NOC spokesman Tony Nezianya described the bid as a strategic move to showcase Nigeria’s development and elevate its global profile through sports. He noted that Abuja’s successful hosting of the 8th All-Africa Games in 2003 proves the country’s capability to manage a large-scale international sporting event.
However, the NOC emphasized that full Federal Government endorsement is still needed before the bid can advance to the formal stage. Without it, Nigeria’s campaign cannot proceed.
The bid is expected to attract major investments in sports infrastructure within the Federal Capital Territory, leaving lasting facilities for athletes and boosting the sports economy.
With the Youth Olympic Games already set for Dakar, Senegal, in 2026, Nigeria’s bid marks another bold step for Africa on the global sports stage. The Commonwealth Games Federation is expected to announce the final host nation in 2026.
