The Vehicle and not the Driver as the main challenge in our democratic governance issues. A modified parliamentary system of governance,adjusted to accommodate some of our unique peculiarities as African people would best serve our polity and purpose.
The wholesale grafting of the american presidential system (which was tailored to meet american peculiarities) on our very different Nigerian political soil is a major factor in our abysmal failure in democratic governance.
This system does not just fit into our peculiar ways. By the way, there is no Country in the World other than Nigeria practicing this wholesale american presidential prototype.
Most countries are practicing a hybrid of the presidential and parliamentary systems our society is not structured and disciplined enough for the american presidential system as it gives room for the main actors to run the system the way they deem fit.
A home grown Afro-centric political system incorporating the good and workable components of other systems would ease democratic governance and ensure leadership discipline and delivery and Citizens cooperation. Put an Angel in charge of our current system, the same unimpressive results will emerge.
The need to change the constitution to meet our peculiar aspirations as a people is long overdue.
Spending huge resources on repainting this unworkable american system in the name of constitutional amendment will not yield any positive outcome.
An exercise in futility!
This presidential system needs change not amendment. The modified parliamentary system gives more room for sub-national autonomy which is simply restructuring in a very clean and easy way.
Nigeria remains the most blessed and the greatest black Nation on Earth. It shall surely rise higher despite seemingly daunting challenges!
