Netherlands to Return 119 Benin Bronzes to Nigeria in Historic Repatriation

The Netherlands has announced the return of 119 Benin Bronzes, looted by British troops in 1897, to Nigeria. These artefacts, including sculptures, figurines, tusks, and an ivory mask, have been housed in the Dutch Wereldmuseum for decades.

This repatriation, described as the largest of its kind, follows Germany’s return of over 20 Benin Bronzes in 2022. Dutch Minister Eppo Bruins emphasized the move as a step toward rectifying historical injustices.

The looted artefacts, significant for their artistry and cultural importance, remain a symbol of colonial violence. Nigeria has called for further repatriations, especially from the British Museum, which holds over 900 pieces but is legally restricted from returning them.

The artefacts will be housed in the Edo Museum of West African Art, set to open in 2026 in Benin City. This decision may increase pressure on other institutions to follow suit.
