A tragic incident unfolded in Kaduna over the weekend when a Naval officer, who was undergoing a course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC) in Jaji, was fatally stabbed by a phone thief. The officer had stopped to fix a flat tyre near the Kawo pedestrian bridge when he was confronted by the assailant. According to eyewitness accounts, the thief demanded the officer’s phone, and upon resistance, stabbed him in the chest with a locally made knife.

Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, the officer was declared dead on arrival. His body was later deposited at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital mortuary. A local vigilante, who attempted to intervene, was also injured during the altercation. However, the thief was overpowered by a gathering crowd and lynched at the scene before authorities could arrive. The community’s swift reaction, though violent, reflected the growing frustration with rising street crime.
Military officials have since initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death, while the Kaduna State Police Command has yet to release an official statement. The tragic event has sparked conversations about public safety, the vulnerability of security personnel in civilian settings, and the need for swift justice and preventive policing in crime-prone areas.
