NAFDAC Destroys Over 80 Containers of Substandard Drugs and Foods

In a nationwide crackdown on fake drugs, more than eighty containers filled with fake and substandard medicines and food products are set to be destroyed by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

The drcision was announced by the  Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Dr. Martins Iluyomade during a press briefing in Lagos, following a violent attack on NAFDAC officials at the Trade Fair market on October 30, 2025.

Dr. Iluyomade described the attack as a major threat to enforcement operations, lamenting that officials now face dangerous conditions while trying to rid markets of harmful products. He noted that ten operational vehicles worth over ₦25 billion were vandalised during the assault, but emphasized that the agency would not relent in its efforts to curb counterfeit goods in Nigeria.

He further expressed concern over the growing moral decay and the large number of people profiting from the illicit trade of fake and substandard products. According to him, the agency will continue its market mop-up exercises to reduce the spread of these items to the barest minimum and ensure the safety of Nigerian consumers.

NAFDAC also commended the Nigeria Customs Service for its collaboration in handing over seized containers of fake medicines for destruction. The agency thanked the Police and Military for their support during the operation and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health in accordance with existing laws.
