Despite being disappointed by his actions after the elections, the Labour Party said it did not regret fielding former governor of Amanbra state, Mr. Peter Obi as its presidential candidate in 2023 general election.
The labour Party through its spokesperson Obiora Ifoh explained that the party expected Obi to lead a post-election reconciliation process, appreciate party leaders, and help build on the over six million votes recorded in 2023. Instead, he alleged that Obi mobilised loyal lawmakers and political figures to factionalise the party and push for the removal of its executives, contrary to the party’s constitution. This, he said, marked the major breakdown in their relationship.
Responding to claims that the conflict was about money, Ifoh denied that Obi was ever asked for financial support. He stated that Obi largely funded his campaign independently and did not donate funds or materials to the party. According to him, the Labour Party relied mainly on proceeds from the sale of nomination forms and handled many legal cases with limited resources, some even pro bono.
On the Obidient movement, Ifoh said they were supporters of Peter Obi rather than committed members of the Labour Party, noting that many did not formally register with the party. He argued that while Obi’s popularity boosted the party’s visibility, the Labour Party existed before him and would continue after his exit, adding that the party now prefers internal peace and a focus on its ideology over personality-driven politics.
