The House of Representatives has passed for second reading a bill seeking to prevent individuals above 60 years from contesting for the offices of President and Governor in Nigeria.
Sponsored by Rep. Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere, the bill proposes amendments to the 1999 Constitution to set new eligibility requirements, including:
A maximum age limit of 60 years for presidential and gubernatorial candidates. A minimum educational qualification of a Bachelor’s degree.
The bill seeks to amend Section 131 for the presidency and Section 177 for governorship positions. Other bills passed for second reading include:

Reserved Seats for Women in National and State Assemblies Bill Increasing female legislative representation. Judicial Reform Bills Including a bill to expedite justice administration and another to increase the number of Supreme Court and Court of Appeal justices.
Creation of New States – Proposals for Wan State (North Central) and Gobir State (Northwest). These legislative efforts aim to promote youth inclusion, gender balance, and governance efficiency in Nigeria.
