The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), has announced a two-week closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport runway in Enugu starting April 22, 2025, due to urgent safety concerns.

Keyamo, expressing disappointment in the quality of the 2019 rehabilitation work, cited persistent waterlogging issues leading to cracks and potholes. Despite ongoing palliative efforts, the runway has worsened, posing risks to travelers. Flights will be rerouted to nearby airports during the closure. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria confirmed the shutdown for emergency repairs.
