The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has barricaded the slip road linking the Goodluck Jonathan Expressway to Ring Road II at the Galadimawa Interchange in Abuja. This action was taken as a preventive measure due to recurring flooding incidents that typically occur in the area during the rainy season.
According to Mr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, the Acting Director-General of FEMD, the water level on the road has already started rising, prompting the decision to close it off to traffic. He emphasized that the move was a proactive step aimed at safeguarding lives and property from potential flood-related disasters.
Mohammed recalled a tragic incident in 2019 when flooding on the same slip road claimed the life of Mr. Tony Okecheme, the Director of Finance at the FCT High Court. Highlighting the seriousness of the situation, he stressed that the department would not take chances with public safety.
He appealed to Abuja residents for understanding and encouraged motorists to use alternative routes. Mohammed also urged citizens to avoid driving through water-logged areas and to always call the emergency toll-free number 112 in the event of any disaster or emergency.
