A middle aged man, Ikechukwu Chukwuemeka Kalu from Otutu, Ohaofia – Arochukwu in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State has killed himself over a N710,000 debt.
The victim, according to a viral video circulating in the social media, was earlier found lying unconscious in front of the Asumpta Catholic Cathedral, Control Post, Owerri, Imo State after poisoning himself.
A security officer manning the entrance gate of the church, Augustine Achonu, who narrated how the incident happened said Kalu, who already had three children took an overdose of a poisonous substance, which immediately rendered him unconscious.
He said the deceased had dropped a letter explaining the reasons for his actions.
The letter explained that Kalu committed suicide over the hardship he was passing through, even with his wife also pregnant. He said Kalu also disclosed that he was unable to pay a loan of N710,000.
Chief gardener of the church, Nkem Ogbonna who also confirmed the incident said: “He died from the intake of the poison. We tried to keep him alive but the poison he took was too much for him.”
