Farouq Aliyu Dismisses Peter Obi’s One-Term Promise as Ignorant Rhetoric

Former House of Representatives Minority Leader, Farouq Aliyu, has criticised Peter Obi’s pledge to serve only one term if elected president in 2027, calling it “mere rhetoric” and a display of ignorance. During an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, Aliyu argued that Obi’s experience as a state governor does not equate to the complexities of national governance, asserting that leading a country like Nigeria is far more demanding than managing a state.

Aliyu further dismissed the strength of the opposition coalition, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating that while the individuals involved are respected, they do not pose a serious challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Using the Nigerian idiom “pour sand inside their gàárì,” he suggested that the APC would continue to disrupt the opposition’s plans heading into the 2027 elections.

He concluded that the coalition lacks unity and credibility, describing it as a group of presidential hopefuls who are unlikely to collaborate effectively. According to him, the fragmented nature of the opposition and their competing ambitions render them incapable of mounting a significant challenge to the APC’s dominance in the coming election.
