Families of Fallen Soldiers Decry Government Neglect Amid Rising Insurgent Attacks

Families of Nigerian soldiers killed in recent insurgent attacks have called on the Federal Government to urgently end the violence and provide better support for troops.

Speaking to Saturday PUNCH, the relatives of the fallen expressed deep sorrow and frustration, emphasizing that soldiers are being deployed to dangerous zones without adequate arms, proper shelter, or welfare. Several widows and family members revealed that their loved ones died in combat without receiving sufficient support or compensation from the authorities.

The attacks, mostly in Borno and Yobe states, have continued into 2025, claiming the lives of numerous soldiers in coordinated assaults by Boko Haram and ISWAP. Despite official claims of successful counterattacks, eyewitnesses and military insiders describe situations where soldiers were overwhelmed, bases were overrun, and troops abandoned their posts. Families report receiving no entitlements or support from the military following their losses, exacerbating their grief and hardship.

Widows and dependents of fallen soldiers highlighted their struggles with poverty and lack of government assistance. Many criticized the military for failing to pay death benefits or provide life insurance payouts. Some widows, facing homelessness and unable to afford basic necessities, expressed deep regret about marrying into the military and warned others against doing the same.

Parents and relatives of serving soldiers expressed fear and anguish, describing the deployment of under-equipped troops as tantamount to sacrificing them. Several parents urged the government to improve protective measures and welfare, noting that many soldiers were demoralized by the lack of support and ongoing insecurity. Families expressed frustration at the government’s perceived inaction and its failure to match the terrorists’ superior firepower.

Military veterans and experts attributed the persistent insurgent attacks to outdated tactics, poor logistics, and lack of technological adaptation. They warned that if the military continues to neglect the welfare of troops and their families, morale would deteriorate further, weakening national security. They called on the government to prioritize military reforms, provide adequate equipment, and address corruption within the defense system to restore hope and ensure the safety of the nation.
