Darlington Akporugo Pleads Guilty to $3 Million U.S. Romance Scam

Darlington Akporugo, a 47-year-old Nigerian, has pleaded guilty to wire fraud and conspiracy in a romance scam that defrauded over 25 victims across the U.S., many of whom were elderly. Arrested a month before his wedding, Akporugo admitted to using fake identities on social media to manipulate victims into sending money, investing in fictitious businesses, and even opening lines of credit for him.

The scheme, which spanned multiple years, resulted in losses exceeding $3 million, with funds often transferred overseas. Some victims were persuaded to purchase luxury items for Akporugo’s personal use.

U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei emphasized the severe financial toll on victims and urged others to report such scams. Akporugo remains in custody and faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine. His sentencing is scheduled for June 6.
