The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has affirmed the prisoon sentence of four hundred and ninety year to former Managing Director of the Nigeria Export-Import Bank (NEXIM Bank), Robert Orya, over a N2.4 billion fraud case. The court upheld the conviction of Robert Orya on all 49 counts brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Orya was initially convicted in February 2026 by the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja. He was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment on each of the 49 counts, resulting in a cumulative 490-year sentence. The charges were linked to obtaining money by false pretences, forgery and advance fee fraud.
The EFCC had alleged that the former bank executive was involved in fraudulent loan transactions that resulted in the loss of about N2.4 billion. During the trial, the prosecution called seven witnesses and argued that it had established the allegations against Orya beyond reasonable doubt.
The latest ruling means the Court of Appeal has upheld the lower court’s conviction and sentence. Orya, who served as NEXIM Bank’s managing director from 2009 to 2016, had challenged the earlier judgment before the appellate court.
