Attempt To Re-dig A Well Claim Five Lives in Three Kano Communities

Following growing concerns about the safety of open wells and the risks posed to children in residential communities in Kano State, the state Director of the Nigeria Fire Service, Sani Anas urged the public to avoid descending into wells during emergencies, emphasizing that such rescue attempts often lead to preventable deaths.

The Director made the call after the desth ofas least five people, including two children were tragedy killed in three local government areas of Kano State.

The first and most devastating incident occurred in Badume Kanawa Village, Bichi LGA, where three men Sa’idu Gada, his son Sani Isyaku, and Yakubu Abdullahi died while attempting to re-dig a well. The rope supporting Gada snapped, trapping him inside. His son and a third man entered the well in separate rescue attempts but were also unable to make it out alive.

According to the Kano State Fire Service spokesperson, Saminu Abdullahi, emergency personnel arrived at the scene and rescued the three victims in an unconscious state. However, they were later confirmed dead. Their bodies were handed over to the police division in Badume for further action.

A separate tragedy occurred in Danbatta LGA, where a 10-year-old boy, Hassan Iliyasu Haruna, fell into a well and died.

The third fatal incident happened in Nassarawa LGA at Badawa Layin Day, where a fire broke out in a residential building, engulfing two bedrooms. A 10-year-old girl was rescued from the burning house but later confirmed dead.
