Nigeria Engages Burkina Faso Secure The Release Of  Nigerian Military Aircraft and Soldiers Detained

Following an earlier media reports that eleven Nigerian Soldiers had been cleared to return back to Nigeria, the Federal Government has confirmed that discussions are ongoing with Burkina Faso over the detention of a Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft and 11 soldiers, who are yet to be released.

The Nigerian Air Force maintained that the landing was for safety reasons, Burkina Faso and the Confederation of Sahel States accused the aircraft of entering their airspace without clearance. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has now taken over the negotiations, with its spokesperson stating that diplomatic engagement is ongoing to secure the release of both the aircraft and the detained personnel.

Retired Nigerian Air Force officers have cautioned against speculation, stressing that premature conclusions could complicate government-to-government negotiations. They advised patience, noting that details of the discussions have not been made public and that diplomacy remains the best approach.

Meanwhile, there are indications that Burkina Faso and other Sahel states may be using the incident as leverage in response to ECOWAS-related economic pressures. A retired officer suggested the detention could be a bargaining tool to seek relief or concessions from Nigeria, though the outcome will depend on the ongoing diplomatic talks.
