A 10-year-old boy named Wasiu tragically lost his life after being struck by a stray bullet during a violent cult clash in the Olosha area of Mushin, Lagos. Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred around 8 p.m. as gunfire erupted, prompting residents and business owners to flee or seek shelter. Wasiu, who was waiting to buy food from a vendor, was caught in the crossfire while attempting to escape to safety, and a stray bullet fatally hit him.
Residents later found Wasiu lying motionless after the chaos subsided. In an effort to save him, they rushed him to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), but they were denied access as the hospital gate was shut. Attempts to reach another gate were hindered by the presence of the cultists in the area, preventing timely medical attention. According to community members, the area had been under siege by suspected cult groups for several days prior to the incident.
One resident described the attack as a sustained gunfire assault that lasted hours, creating widespread panic. The attack has raised serious concerns about the deteriorating security situation around the LUTH vicinity. This is not the first time violence has erupted in the area, and community members are increasingly fearful for their safety, especially as previous attacks have also resulted in fatalities.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Vice Chairman of Mushin Local Government, Tubosun Aruwe, condemned the attack, calling it senseless and devastating. He expressed deep sorrow over the death of Wasiu and others affected by similar violence, extending his condolences to the grieving families. Aruwe urged security agencies to launch a thorough investigation and ensure those responsible are swiftly apprehended and prosecuted. Meanwhile, police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin has not yet responded to inquiries regarding arrests or investigations.
