Trump Threatens Apple with 25% Tariff Over Overseas iPhone Production

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Apple if the company does not manufacture iPhones sold in the U.S. domestically. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated he had previously informed Apple CEO Tim Cook of his expectations for U.S.-based production, criticizing Apple’s continued reliance on manufacturing hubs like India.

Trump reiterated his stance during a recent trip to Qatar, emphasizing that he wants Apple to move production from India to the U.S. He claimed Cook acknowledged the issue, suggesting Apple would increase U.S. manufacturing. However, Cook recently disclosed that most iPhones sold in the U.S. would still originate from India, highlighting the challenges of shifting production amid rising tariffs on Chinese goods.

Despite exemptions on finished smartphones, many Apple components are still subject to tariffs, potentially costing the company $900 million this quarter. Cook noted that while the impact of tariffs has been limited so far, ongoing trade tensions and policy uncertainty could pose financial risks in the near future.
