Nigerian Youth Leaders Demand Religious Balance in 2027 Presidential Ticket

As the 2027 general elections approach, the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL) has urged political parties to adopt a religiously balanced presidential ticket to promote national unity and inclusion.

In a press release signed by its President General, Comrade Goodluck Ibem, the group expressed concerns over the 2023 Muslim-Muslim ticket, which they say left many Christians feeling marginalized and excluded from national leadership.

CONYL emphasized that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity, and that national leadership should reflect a balance of the country’s major religions. The group argued that ensuring either a Muslim-Christian or Christian-Muslim presidential ticket is not merely a political tactic, but a moral obligation necessary to rebuild trust, foster peace, and uphold the country’s founding values of mutual respect and inclusivity.

The coalition highlighted the discontent among Nigerian youth, the largest voting demographic, who are increasingly frustrated with divisive politics. They noted that young Nigerians are seeking leaders who unite rather than fragment the nation and stressed that a balanced religious ticket would signal fairness, strengthen interfaith harmony, and restore public confidence in democratic governance.

CONYL called on political parties, religious leaders, and civil society to support their demand for equitable representation in national leadership. They concluded by expressing optimism in the patriotism and wisdom of Nigeria’s leaders to embrace inclusivity and steer the nation toward a more united future.
