Ahead of the 2027 general elections, elder statesman Alhaji Tanko Yakasai stated that President Bola Tinubu currently has the best chances of re-election, citing his incumbency, backing from governors—including some in the opposition—and the absence of a unified northern position on an alternative candidate.
Yakasai emphasized that no credible opposition has yet emerged with the strength or national structure to effectively challenge Tinubu.
However, the Obidient Movement, through its coordinator Dr. Yunusa Tanko, strongly disagreed with Yakasai’s assessment. They acknowledged his experience but argued that Nigeria needs younger, visionary leadership. The movement criticized Tinubu’s administration for deepening poverty, youth unemployment, economic decline, and promoting nepotism, particularly affecting the northern region.
The PDP also dismissed Yakasai’s comments, predicting a “historic defeat” for Tinubu in 2027. Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor described the president’s leadership as lacking in competence and vision. He asserted that a broad coalition of dissatisfied Nigerians is poised to oust Tinubu and redirect the nation’s future toward progress and unity.
