NANS Holds JAMB Responsible for Student’s Suicide, Demands Leadership Overhaul

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for its role in the death of Miss Timilehin Faith Opesusi, who reportedly died by suicide after scoring 190 in the 2025 UTME. NANS argues that JAMB’s handling of this year’s results, especially in Lagos and the South East, contributed to the psychological distress that led to the tragedy.

In a statement issued by Comr. Tenyo Dighopho, NANS criticized JAMB for administrative failures and demanded the immediate resignation of the Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede. The student body stated that Oloyede’s previous reforms are now overshadowed by the “unforgivable negligence” that resulted in a student’s death and called for compensation and support for the bereaved family.

NANS further demanded a full overhaul of JAMB’s examination and result-processing systems, advocating for independent oversight to restore credibility and fairness. They warned that the current system has become a source of trauma and confusion for students, and without reform, more lives and futures are at risk.

In addition, the group insisted that the rescheduled examination for nearly 380,000 affected candidates be conducted transparently and equitably. NANS urged the Federal Government to intervene with a full investigation, emphasizing that the demand for change is not emotional but essential to prevent further institutional failure in Nigeria’s education system.
