UK to Engage Nigeria on Immigration Reforms Impacting Care and Graduate Visas

The British High Commission in Nigeria has announced plans to consult with the Nigerian government regarding the UK’s newly proposed immigration reforms. These changes, detailed in a recent White Paper, include discontinuing the social care visa route, tightening settlement pathways for migrants, reducing the duration of the graduate visa, and introducing English language requirements for dependants. While the implementation timeline remains unclear, the UK has assured Nigeria of continued dialogue and cooperation.

The Commission emphasized that the reforms are intended to bring greater order, fairness, and economic benefit to the UK’s immigration system, while also addressing concerns over high net migration. It stressed that changes will be implemented gradually and in a collaborative manner with key international partners like Nigeria.

In response to fears of potential visa restrictions for certain nationalities, the UK reiterated the value it places on its relationship with Nigeria. It highlighted the strong people-to-people ties between the two nations and reaffirmed its commitment to welcoming skilled individuals and fostering a diverse, inclusive society.
