Nigerian Correctional Service Refutes Claims of Poor Inmate Feeding

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has strongly denied recent allegations suggesting that inmates in its facilities are poorly fed. In a statement by its spokesman, DCC Abubakar Umar, the Service described the report as false and misleading, labeling it a recycled story meant to stir unnecessary controversy. Umar emphasized that the NCoS operates strictly under the Nigerian Correctional Service Act of 2019, which mandates proper nutrition and welfare for inmates.

Umar clarified that inmates are given meals that meet health standards as recommended by professionals and overseen by a ration committee. He noted that menu plans are standardized and updated periodically to match changing health requirements and budget conditions. To further support inmate welfare, the Federal Government recently increased the daily feeding allowance per inmate to ₦1,125, in response to inflation and economic challenges.

The spokesman added that the feeding process is transparent and regularly inspected by independent bodies, including the Ministry of Interior, civil society organizations, and international partners. According to him, none of their findings support the allegations of dehumanizing treatment or poor welfare conditions.

Umar concluded by assuring the public of the Service’s ongoing commitment to the humane treatment of inmates. He stressed that the NCoS will continue to uphold international standards, protect the rights and dignity of all inmates, and implement necessary reforms in correctional facilities.
