CAN Pays Tribute to Pope Francis’ Enduring Legacy

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed sorrow over the death of Pope Francis at the age of 88. In a statement by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN extended condolences to the Catholic Church, praising the Pope’s remarkable leadership and deep compassion.

Archbishop Okoh highlighted Pope Francis’ strong connection to Nigeria through his appointment of Nigerian bishops and cardinals, his advocacy for peace through interfaith dialogue, and his firm stance against poverty, corruption, and inequality. Though the Pope never visited Nigeria, his influence was deeply felt across the nation.

CAN also acknowledged the spiritual richness of the Pope’s writings, such as Laudato Si’ and Amoris Laetitia, which addressed critical global and family issues. The association prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and encouraged Nigerians to carry forward his legacy of justice, humility, and unity.
