Fire Destroys Sokoto School for Boko Haram Orphans, Government Officials Visit Site

A devastating fire broke out at Jarma UK Academy in Sokoto on Wednesday evening, destroying key parts of the school including students’ hostels, administrative offices, a computer lab, and staff rooms.

The school, founded in 2018 by philanthropist Alhaji Ummarun Kwabo (Jarman Sokoto), caters to 176 students—mostly orphans displaced by Boko Haram insurgency in Borno and Yobe States. It combines western education, Islamic teachings, and entrepreneurial training.

A delegation from the Sokoto State government, led by Secretary to the State Government Muhammad Bello Sifawa, visited the school to assess the damage and express sympathy. Other officials in the delegation included the Chief of Staff, Aminu Haliru Dikko, and the State Attorney-General, Nasiru Mohammed Binji.

While the exact cause of the fire is still unknown, it destroyed clothing, mattresses, blankets, and other personal belongings of the students. Fortunately, no lives were lost and no injuries were reported.

Sifawa praised the founder’s efforts and assured the school of the government’s support, acknowledging its vital role in rehabilitating vulnerable children affected by terrorism.
