Deadly Wildfires Sweep Across South Korea, Forcing Mass Evacuations

Wildfires have erupted across South Korea, claiming at least two lives and displacing hundreds of residents. The fires, which broke out in multiple locations, have led to the declaration of a national disaster, affecting Ulsan city and the provinces of North and South Gyeongsang.

In Sancheong County, two firefighters were found dead, and two others remain missing as authorities continue search and rescue operations. More than 200 residents were forced to evacuate their homes in eight villages as the fire spread rapidly, fueled by strong winds. Meanwhile, in Uiseong County, North Gyeongsang Province, over 400 people were displaced due to the advancing flames.

Acting President Choi Sang-mok called for immediate and full-scale firefighting efforts to contain the blaze before nightfall. However, the strong winds have significantly hampered the response, making it difficult for emergency teams to bring the fires under control.

The Korea Forest Service has issued serious wildfire warnings in 12 locations, including Busan and the central city of Daejeon, as authorities remain on high alert. Efforts to contain the fires are ongoing, with emergency teams working to prevent further loss of life and property.
