Nigerian-American actress Ayo Edebiri has opened up about the severe backlash she faced after billionaire businessman Elon Musk shared a false report about her in February 2024.
The fake news claimed that Disney was considering her as a replacement for Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Musk, the owner of X (formerly Twitter), responded to the false report with a post that read, “Disney sucks,” a reaction Edebiri believes gave the misinformation widespread attention.
Following Musk’s post, Edebiri became the target of intense online harassment, receiving numerous death threats and racial slurs. Reflecting on the ordeal in a recent Instagram story, she described the incident as one of the worst experiences of online abuse she has ever faced.
She criticized Musk, accusing him not only of amplifying false narratives but also of enabling harmful rhetoric. Despite the negativity, Edebiri appeared to take a sarcastic approach in her response, expressing disbelief over the situation while calling out Musk’s controversial behavior.
