Delta Catholic Priest Suspended After Marrying in the U.S.

Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe of the Catholic Diocese of Warri has been suspended after marrying Dora Chichah in Dallas, USA, on December 29, 2024, without completing the formal process to leave the priesthood.

In a decree dated January 16, 2025, the Diocese stated that he incurred automatic (Latae Sententiae) suspension under Canon 1394 S1 and is barred from presenting himself as a priest.

Despite his request for release in November 2024, the Diocese stated he did not complete the required documentation before proceeding with the marriage. A viral video of the wedding prompted the church’s swift action.

His sister, Mary Okanatotor, defended him, citing his struggles with loneliness and mental health issues, and noted that he had informed the Diocese of his intentions. The Diocese stated that he can appeal the suspension if he shows a willingness to reform.
