Low Voter Turnout Mars Lagos Local Government Elections

Polling units in Jakande Estate, Oke-Afa, and Ago Okota areas of Lagos recorded extremely low voter turnout during Saturday’s local government elections. Units such as 003, 05, 07, 08, 09, and 012 had fewer than 40 voters combined between 9:00 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. In some locations, only a handful of people had shown up, with Unit 08 receiving just two voters in over 90 minutes. Meanwhile, young people were seen playing football on the roads, and police officers stationed at the polls remained idle due to the peaceful but inactive atmosphere.

At Polling Unit 014 on 21 Road, Second Avenue in Festac Town, the situation was even more concerning as LASIEC officials were completely absent by 11:30 a.m., leaving the unit unmanned and potential voters stranded. However, most other polling units were operational, and there were no reported cases of violence. The Lagos State Police Commissioner, CP Olohundare Moshood, was seen monitoring the situation in Surulere, Festac Town, Amuwo Odofin, and other areas to ensure order.

Despite the peaceful environment, many residents chose not to participate, watching the events unfold from their windows or relaxing in front of their homes. Their apathy was driven by a deep-rooted mistrust in the electoral system, particularly regarding vote credibility and the impartiality of INEC. Some residents expressed outright skepticism about the value of their votes, saying they had lost faith in the entire process.

This voter apathy is not a new trend, especially during local government elections, according to residents like Taofeek Sumonu. He remarked that many people only turn out for gubernatorial or presidential elections, which they perceive as more impactful. The continued low participation highlights a broader issue of political disengagement at the grassroots level, driven by widespread doubts about electoral fairness and transparency.
